Ogun State Socialite Arraigned Over 35m Scam


A 46 year old Mary Akerele, an Ogun state socialite, was arraigned in the Ogun State High Court 4, Abeokuta on Monday. She was arraigned before Justice Abiodun Akinyemi after she was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibadan zone. She was charged with five counts bordering on stealing to the tune of 35,520,000.

It all started when a petition was submitted against the defendant. It alleged that she collected the said sum in installments to supply four truckloads of rice from a milling company in Bida, Niger state. This transaction occurred between Mrs Akerele and Alhaja Abike Oladoja. However, the socialite allegedly diverted the funds.

Mary Akerele who lives in the Aseko area of Idiroko, Ogun State is said to be a trader who trades under the name “Goodness of Jess Global Ventures”.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges but has been denied bail due to flouting the terms of an administrative bail which she was granted prior to the hearing. She is being remanded in the Ibara Correctional Center, Abeokuta.

The case has been adjourned till March 4.
